According to Wikipedia (the ultimate authority for post midnight bloggers)coopetition is a "neologism coined to describe cooperative competition." in other terms two competing entities collaborating in a manner to benefit both. As I wrap up the first full day of our state professional association conference I have been reminded that this is one of the benefits of attending these type of networking events.
Tonight I blog from OCHEA (Ohio Continuing Education Association) annual conference and am encouraged by the increase in attendance of my peers from a year ago. We have wonderful conversation and even a wild Bunco tournament.
As we talk about the importance of business networking, one should not dismiss the importance of professional associations. I see the importance as twofold. First the opportunity to receive industry updates and Benchmark against your peers. We have had such great idea swapping and learning today I have already been modifying my website and planning my departmental meeting update. Second is the opportunity to explore mutually beneficial business relationships. If I train on a software package that you don't have a trainer for, can't we work together and both make money. Think of the long term benefit to keeping that customer happy by being able to satisfy their need. You are still the hero and yet we both make a profit.
Have you ever worked with a competitor? Did it work? Were both of you happy?
