LinkedIn is a useful, professional networking tool. No pictures of your 2002 spring break here. Just a place to do business. Here are 5 thinks I like (and 1 I don’t) about LinkedIn:
Professional site. You don’t have to weed through all the pictures of grandchildren and Farmville requests to get to business updates. Facebook is great for that, but LinkedIn is about business.
Updated information. I find that for the most part, information is pretty current here. It notifies me when people switch positions so that I am able to keep my CRM up to date.
Resource. I needed the names of a couple of CIO’s/technology Directors from local companies for an upcoming event. By doing a search on LI it was easy to identify these folks and to confirm those that I already had.
Making connections. As an advocate for business networking and having an appreciation for the fact that networking IS NOT selling I am a regular user of LI’s built in request an introduction tool. Similar to how you would ask to be introduced to someone at an event, you can ask for a virtual introduction through LI.
Keyword searches. Looking for an instructor who is able to teach SAP? Got it. Just did a search on LI and found one and asked our mutual contact for an introduction!
And the one thing I don’t like. Creepers. People who scope out your contacts and try to do business with them without asking you for the introduction. Please only try to connect with my contacts if you actually know them.
